Alice, Beatrix, Carmen, Della, Eugenia, and Fern combine to make an 84” x 84” sampler quilt perfect for using your favorite colorful fat quarters! The 45” x 45” Small Quilt includes a single large-scale Alice block and makes a perfect baby quilt or wall hanging. All blocks are sewn with simple straight and diagonal seams. No templates or paper piecing! ABOUT THE FABRIC My quilt is made using 30 fat quarters from my Pacific and Rhoda Ruth collections for Robert Kaufman Fabrics, which are being sold together as Paintbox Basics. The pattern includes a fabric chart with easy-to-follow codes to ensure that you can duplicate my fabric placement exactly or, if you’re using different fabric, distribute it evenly throughout the quilt. When selecting colorful fat quarters for the Lepidoptera quilt, choose colorful fabrics in sets of 6 monochromatic fat quarters each. The quilt will be most successful if the fabrics in each set include a value scale from lightest (Fabric 1) to darkest (Fabric 6). A complete list of the colorful fabrics I used is included in the pattern. My background fabric is Robert Kaufman’s Essex metallic yarn-dyed linen blend in Oyster. (A good non-metallic option is Essex yarn-dyed Flax.) My white and dark block detail fabrics are Kona Snow and Espresso. If you prefer, you can easily substitute scraps or odd-sized fabric from your stash for the colorful fat quarters. The instructions for each of the block designs include a complete list of cut pieces for each block, so it’s easy to use scraps or make blocks for other projects. TOKYO SUBWAY MAP QUILTS pdf quilt pattern

This scrap-busting quilt is made with 1,600 fabric squares and 25 unique blocks. Use scraps in 12 colors to create the subway "lines" and "stops" on this stylized transit map. Each of the four size variations follows the same layout using a different size of fabric squares. All sizes include instructions for a pieced back. There are two different ways to use colorful fabric scraps in this quilt: SUPER SCRAPPY VERSION This version is ideal for quilters with a large stash of scraps who want to use many different fabrics and have some flexibility in laying them out. This pattern includes instructions for 4 different block variations, each of which is enhanced by arranging the fabrics by value, from light to dark. The entire quilt is made with 2½” strips of fabric. You can cut these from yardage or use precut strips (e.g. jelly rolls or roll-ups). Each set of block instructions includes a list of the pieces needed to make that block, so you can also make the blocks from scraps. Quilt sizes and fabric requirements are included on the materials chart in the listing images. You will also need the fabric marking tool of your choice and, optionally, 22 sandwich bags for organizing the cut fabric and a 2½" scrap of template plastic for making a guide to mark the diagonal seams. SELECTING FABRIC Each of the four block designs in Solar Eclipse (A, B, C, and D) is made using a different group of four coordinating fabrics. I used Robert Kaufman’s Kona Cotton Solids, as shown in the materials chart. You can use the same fabrics, something similar, or something totally different. The main thing is to pay attention to the value (lightness or darkness) of each fabric. The quilt will be most effective when each group includes a range of values, with Fabric 1 being the lightest and Fabric 4 being the darkest. The background fabric should be a neutral solid like white that contrasts with the colorful fabrics. USING PRECUT STRIPS Precut 2½” strips (e.g. jelly rolls or roll-ups) can be substituted for the colorful fabrics as follows: Baby Quilt = 16 strips Lap Quilt = 40 strips Queen Quilt = 95 strips Note: The Lap Quilt can be made using one 40-piece roll each of colorful and white fabric.USING SCRAPS The individual block instructions include lists of the cut pieces needed to make single blocks. The “black” and “white” fabrics don’t have to be true white or black. A light gray, or even a very pale pink can be used instead of white and a dark charcoal or indigo can be used instead of black. The key is for one to be light and one to be dark. Choosing a medium gray, denim, or linen tone for the background will help to keep things balanced. Because each one is made up of several smaller pieces, the whales will look best made with solids or prints that are smaller, monochromatic, and/or non-directional. No templates or paper piecing!ABOUT THE FABRIC My quilt is made using fat quarters from my Pacific and Rhoda Ruth collections for Robert Kaufman Fabrics, as well as Kona cotton solid coordinates. The pattern includes a fabric chart with easy-to-follow letter and number codes to ensure that you can duplicate my fabric placement exactly or, if you’re using different fabric, distribute it evenly throughout the quilt. When selecting colorful fat quarters for the Fancy Forest quilt, choose colorful fabrics in sets of 5 monochromatic fat quarters each. The quilt will be most successful if the fabrics in each set include a value scale from lightest (Fabric 1) to darkest (Fabric 5). A complete list of the colorful fabrics I used is included in the pattern. My background fabric is Robert Kaufman’s Essex yarn-dyed linen blend in Olive. My white and dark block detail fabrics are Kona Snow and Espresso. Because of the wide variety of blocks and colors used in the quilts, you will not end up using the same amount of each fat quarter and, in some cases, will have fabric left over. If you prefer, you can easily substitute scraps or odd-sized fabric from your stash for the colorful fat quarters.
